ScholarshipsThe Southington Education Foundation is proud to offer the following scholarships to graduating Southington students. Students receive information on how to apply for these scholarships during their senior year. Scholarships have been available to students since 2015. Most Recent Recipients | Past Recipients Dr. Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. ScholarshipPROVIDER: Southington Education Foundation QUALIFICATIONS: Graduating Southington High School senior in good standing who is furthering his or her education. The student must be civic-minded and demonstrate the desire to help school, community and/or country. ESSAY: Provide an essay describing your involvement in school, community, and/or country and how your activities may shape your future civic involvement. HOW SELECTED: Southington Education Foundation Scholarship Committee VALUE: $2,000 AWARDED/TRANSMITTED: Upon proof of successful completion of first semester STEM ScholarshipPROVIDER: Southington Education Foundation QUALIFICATIONS: Graduating Southington High School senior in good standing with a desire to major or minor in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. ESSAY: Provide an essay explaining your intended college major or minor and how it relates to your career path in science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM). HOW SELECTED: Southington Education Foundation Scholarship Committee VALUE: $2,000 AWARDED/TRANSMITTED: Upon proof of successful completion of first semester Visual & Performing Arts ScholarshipPROVIDER: Southington Education Foundation QUALIFICATIONS: Awarded to a graduating Southington High School senior in good standing with a desire to major in the Visual or Performing Arts. Categories include: Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Theater. ESSAY: Provide an essay explaining why they selected their intended college major and how it relates to their career path in the arts. (Candidates with the strongest applications may be asked to provide either an art portfolio or a 2-3 minute performance video.) HOW SELECTED: Southington Education Foundation Scholarship Committee. VALUE: $2,000 AWARDED/TRANSMITTED: Upon proof of successful completion of first semester Brian Goralski Memorial ScholarshipPROVIDER: Brian Goralski Scholarship Fund administered by the Southington Education Foundation (SEF) QUALIFICATIONS: The Brian Goralski Scholarship will be awarded to any graduating Southington High School senior who is in good standing and who wakes up every day trying to do the right thing all of the time. ESSAY: The eligible student application will include a one page narrative on why they believe they are the ideal candidate for the honorarium. HOW SELECTED: The Goralski Family AWARDED/TRANSMITTED: Announced at the Southington High School Awards Program. Paid directly to the recipient after proof of successful completion of first semester is received by SEF contact. Katherine Cavanaugh, Aspasia Nguyen, and Samrath Singh have been named recipients of Southington Education Foundation’s 2026 scholarships. Each scholarship awards $2000 to recipients. Katherine Cavanaugh was named the recipient of SEF’s Dr. Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. Scholarship, awarded to a graduating Southington High School senior who is civic-minded and committed to serving the school, community, and country. Katherine plans to attend Central Connecticut State University, where she will major in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Biology. She says her leadership, service, and advocacy experiences throughout high school have shaped who she is and how she hopes to make a difference in the future. One of her most meaningful commitments has been her work with the STEPS Youth Coalition, where she served in a leadership role focused on youth mental health advocacy and substance misuse prevention. She is especially proud that her work with local leaders and legislators contributed to an important policy change at the state level. At school, she has served as President of the National Honor Society, captain of the cross country and track teams, and a class officer. In addition, her volunteer work at the Hospital for Special Care has strengthened her dedication to serving others. As she pursues her studies in mechanical engineering and biology, Katherine wrote in her essay, “I hope to work in biomedical engineering, developing technologies that improve lives while remaining actively involved in community service and advocacy.” Katherine is the daughter of Mary and Donald Cavanaugh. Aspasia Nguyen was named the recipient of SEF’s Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating Southington High School senior in good standing who plans to major or minor in the arts. She will attend the University of Hartford, where she plans to major in Art, Design and Automation. Aspasia says art has shaped her life from an early age and has given her a powerful outlet for self-expression through painting and drawing. Visits to museums, where she explored a variety of styles and works from different eras, along with her interest in indie cartoons, strengthened her appreciation for the arts. Her growing interest in cartoons and the humor and rich storytelling they offer inspired her to pursue animation, a longtime dream. She looks forward to college, where she hopes to discover new ways to express herself and share her ideas through animation. In addition to her artistic interests, Aspasia has been active in school as section leader for the marching band’s mellophones and as a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Dungeons & Dragons Club. Aspasia is the daughter of Efrosini Moutogiannis and Minh-Triet Nguyen. Samrath Singh was named the recipient of SEF’s STEM Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating Southington High School senior in good standing who plans to major or minor in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. He plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, where he will major in Biological Science. Samrath’s interest in medicine began when he observed clinical procedures in an intensive care unit firsthand. Reflecting on that experience, he wrote, “I realized that medicine is more than machines or vital signs—it is empathy put into practice alongside knowledge.” He then began volunteering with the Red Cross as a club manager, where he guided donors and helped organize blood drives that collected more than 1,200 units. Shadowing physicians and logging more than 600 hours in the emergency department of a hospital in New Britain further strengthened his commitment to studying biological sciences. At school, Samrath has been involved in the National Honor Society, jazz band, tennis, and robotics, among other activities. He also serves as a representative to the Board of Education. While studying for a career in medicine, Samrath states in his essay “ I want to understand diseases at its core so that I can contribute to treatments that are both scientifically rigorous and humanely delivered.” Samrath is the son of Khushbir Kaur and Anshvinder Singh. This is the 12th year that SEF has awarded scholarships to Southington students.
